  1. Source Distribution of the KA9Q Internet Package and Utilities

  9. Note to those receiving this package as an ARC file:
  10.     In order to preserve the structure of the directories used for the
  11.     sources, this code is distributed as a group of .ARC files, one per
  12.     subdirectory.  DO NOT un-Arc all of the .ARC files in the same
  13.     directory as there are duplicate file names.  The suggested procedure
  14.     for unpacking is to create subdirectories named: BM, DOC, EXE, SRC,
  15.     and TNC, and then un-Arc each .ARC file in the appropriate 
  16.     subdirectory.  Note that the SRC and BM makefiles assume that the
  17.     resulting executable file will reside in ../EXE, so these should all
  18.     be subdirectories of some main directory.

  20. This package contains everything you need to install and run the KA9Q Internet
  21. software for packet radio.  Included are the executable programs, sample 
  22. configuration files, and all installation and user documentation.  In addition,
  23. all of the sourcecode for each of the executable programs is included, along
  24. with a technical reference manual describing the internal operation of the 
  25. net.exe program.

  27. This release of the KA9Q Internet code contains the following subdirectories:
  28.  
  29. exe -    Contains the main executable file "net.exe" and a prototype
  30.     "autoexec.net". Copy net.exe to wherever you put local commands.
  31.     When run, net.exe reads initialization commands from the file
  32.     "autoexec.net" (if it exists) in the ROOT (not current) directory
  33.     of the current drive. Copy the sample autoexec.net provided to the
  34.     root directory and edit it to reflect your node configuration.
  35.     See the files in the doc directory (especially doc/useguide.doc)
  36.     for details.

  38.     The mail user interface 'bm.exe' by Bdale N3EUA is also in this 
  39.     directory, along with sample configuration files.  You will need
  40.     to read the bm.doc and smtp.doc files in order to install bm.

  42. doc -    A collection of text documentation files:
  43.  
  44.     howto.doc - READ THIS BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING!  This is a document
  45.     created by WB6RQN and updated by N3EUA that attempts to lead you
  46.     through a generic configuration and setup of the software.
  47.  
  48.     overview.doc - an overview of the interfaces and protocols currently
  49.     supported, with a capsule summary of each along with notes on the
  50.     implementation.
  51.  
  52.     useguide.doc - Practical details on using the "net.exe" program,
  53.     including full descriptions of the commands.
  54.  
  55.     techref.doc - a detailed guide to the guts of the code, with emphasis
  56.     on the interfaces between TCP/UDP and the application. Intended for
  57.     those wishing to write their own application software or add subnet
  58.     interface drivers.
  59.  
  60.     bm.doc - documentation on installing and using the mail user interface
  61.     program.
  62.  
  63.     smtp.doc - documentation on installing and maintaining the SMTP mail
  64.     client and server.
  65.  
  66.     kiss.doc - the specification of the KISS protocol for host<->tnc
  67.     communications.  An implementation of this standard for the TNC2 is
  68.     included with this distribution.

  70. bm -    Sources for BM, a standalone mail command (client) by Bdale Garbee, 
  71.     N3EUA.  Full documentation is in doc/bm.doc. DoubleDOS is handy in 
  72.     allowing you to run it without shutting down net.exe.
  73.  
  74. src -    Sources for the "net.exe" program. They were written using the Aztec
  75.     C compilers for the Z-80 and the 8086. Note that pc100.c and pc100.h
  76.     are unfinished and are not yet usable.  There is a makefile for the
  77.     Aztec "make" command.

  79. tnc -    Implementations of the KISS protocol for TNC1, TNC2, and VAD boards.

  81. We hope that everything you need to know is contained in the documentation 
  82. files in this package.  If you run into any snags, please communicate them 
  83. to us for correction in future releases of the software.
